It is extremely important to not automatically discount the highest or lowest one or two wall thickness readings from any data set - as some NDT testing firms routinely handle questionable data. This is ensured by the use of on-site waveform verification - which establishes that every wall thickness reading is correct before it is saved for record.

Such on-site verification is important for all piping investigations, and critically important where conditions have created isolated areas of pitting. In such cases, it is those one or two lowest measured wall thickness readings which ultimately define the useful remaining service life of a piping system - a system which may otherwise seem in acceptable condition based upon average wall thickness values.
